I've read Carnegie's book but being the 'yes-man' can only get you so far. Sure, it happens to work well in amassing Facebook friends and LinkedIn recommendations, maybe even selling a few things, but I think the more important way to look at life is to be remembered. Chances are the person who gives constructive criticism with his real feelings on a topic and creates an emotional reaction will likely be remembered rather than the thousands of polite nodding heads.

"Overdo it and people will wonder if anything you say is just a veiled attempt at self-promotion"

You passed that point a long time ago. You even clicked "I like it" next to your facebook status of this article that YOU wrote. Think nobody is going to notice the self promotion there?

It's the same with your shilling for companies. At some point it's inevitable that people will lose interest in all the products that you like because they'll assume it's simply self promotion and not a genuine review. Look at all the fake review sites on the internet for diet pills, exercise dvd's, and miracle cures. Only an idiot takes any online review seriously unless it's from a source that they KNOW is unbiased. And those are hard to find. I consider anything over 1000 friends on facebook (more or less because it's totally arbitrary considering the circumstances) a shameless attempt at self promotion and a clear sign of mental problems. But, maybe that's just me.
